Exeter girls track closed a mind-blowing season last week that included sweeping the league championships, cruising into an area victory and taking second in Divisin II Valley Championships.

The Monarchs could call the 2005 season a memorable one.

The team traveled south to last week's Valley Masters Meet at Liberty High School in Bakersfield. Mid-distance runners Rachell Mitchell and Allison Gonzales both placed in individual events against all teams in all divisions in the CIF Central Section.

Facing big dogs from Fresno and Clovis, freshman Gonzales pulled into fourth place in the 3200-meter race with a time of 11:50.86. The race left the up and coming runner just over a second shy of advancing to the State meet in Sacramento.

Lauren Saylor, Buchanon standout, finished way in front of the pack to take first place in the two-mile run in 10:50.76. Vanesa Zuzuarrega of Buchanon completed the race in 11:35.61 for second place. And barely beating out Gonzales for third place, Laura Dodd of Clovis finished in 11:49.28 just steps ahead of Exeter's top runner.

In the 800-meter race, Exeter's Rachell Mitchell finished in sixth place with a personal best time of 2:25.98. Ashlee Thomas of Bakersfield took the title in the event with a jaw-dropping time of 2:18.10. Mitchell finished just behind Edison's Courtney Gooch who crossed the finish line in 2:24.99.

Both Mitchell and Allison joined Abbey Cochran and Kelly Curtis in for the four by 400-meter relay. Exeter finished in 4:22.50, their third best time, for 14th place.

The Monarchs four by 100-meter relay team also took 14th place at the Valley meet. Melissa Helms, Shea Cosart, Tiffany Harlien and Jennifer Landers completed the race in 55.06.

Overall, the team took 21st place with a total score of just five points.
