Exeter team takes District Championship

The Exeter 15 Year Old Babe Ruth All Stars gained a berth in the finals of the Yankee Division State Tournament with 2 wins over Shafter in the past three days.

In the first game against Shafter, Exeter won a squeeker 4-3. Exeter jumped ahead in the first inning on a single by Patrick Hutchenson who stole second. Jonathan Phillips walked and Brandon Edmonds singled to load the bases. Jack Griggs then beat out an infield single to drive in Hutchenson.

Exeter extended its lead in the fourth. Will Brown walked with one out, and advanced to second on a passed ball. Brown then scored on a single up the middle by Fernando Chavez. Following walks to Kyle Espinola and Junior Ibarra, Patrick Hutchenson then lined a single scoring them both for a 4-0 lead.

Shafter mounted a comeback in the fifth scoring two runs. With two on and two out Shafter hit a deep drive to left. Left fielder Will Brown raced back and got his glove on it but couldn't make the catch which allowed the runners to score. Shafter added their third run in the seventh on a walk, stolen base, fielder's choice and a single.

Patrick Hutchenson was the winning pitcher, going all 7 innings allowing 5 hits, striking out 3 and walking 5.

The second game against Shafter proved to be just as tight with Exeter winning 2-0 on a combined shutout from Kyle Espinola, Travis Arroyo, and Brandon Edmonds. They allowed 7 hits, walked 2 and stuck out 7. All relied heavily on their defense which consistently made plays.

Exeter scored in the second inning on three consecutive singles by Lucas Pernu, Travis Arroyo, and Fernando Chavez. Exeter added an insurance run in the sixth on a double to right by Jonathan Phillips who moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Will Brown.

Exeter will face Liberty Ranchos from the Madera area in the finals. Exeter will have to beat Liberty twice having lost to them earlier in the tournament, to gain the Championship.

The Exeter 15 Year Old Babe Ruth Baseball team captured their first ever District 4 Championship on July 5, by defeating Dinuba twice, 15-4 and 10-5. To arrive at the Championship, Exeter also defeated Lemoore 4-3, and Corcoran 14-8 in previous games.

In game one of the Championship Tournament, Patrick Hutchenson was the big bat, going 2 for 3 with a double and triple that drove in 5 runs. Jonathan Phillips, Brandon Edmonds, and Fernando Chavez each had two hits, while Jr. Ibarra, Will Brown, and Jack Griggs each added a hit. Will Brown was the winning pitcher in game one, working all 5 innings, allowing 2 hits, striking out 4 and walking 3.

In game two, Fernando Chavez earned the win, pitching 6 innings, allowing 4 hits, 4 runs, and striking out 3. He aided his own cause by hammering a triple and driving in 2 runs. Jr. Ibarra also had a pair of hits while Patrick Hutchenson, Brandon Edmonds, Kyle Espinola, Travis Arroyo, and Stephen Franscowiak all contributed base hits.
