Tigers serve up wins in opening week

Woodlake girls tennis returned to the courts this week with three matches and a 2-1 opening week of play.

In three preseason contests, the Tigers came out to defeat both Strathmore and Kingsburg while falling to Fowler in their lone away match.

The Tigers opened the preseason schedule with a 3-6 loss to Fowler on Aug. 30.

No. 1 singles player Priscilla Ruiz, No. 6 singles player Christina Cendejas and No. 1 doubles pair Ruiz and Heather Wood took the three Woodlake wins of the day.

The following day, Woodlake dominated in its first victory with a 9-0 win over Strathmore. The Tigers pounded out six singles wins and three straight doubles wins.

Ruiz defeated Strathmore's Beth Bevans 8-2 while No. 2 singles player Claudia Diaz won 8-1 over Emily Baldwin. In the No. 3 singles match, Woodlake's Sandra Zequeida brought down Strathmore's Corine Awbrey 8-2.

In the doubles competition, Ruiz and Diaz paired up to take another win over Bevans and Alice Cisneros, 8-0. Zequeida and Wood then defeated Baldwin and Awbrey 8-0 also. Woodlake's Daniela Flores and Karah Letson defeated Olena Biloblovski and Tamara Ellis with another 8-0 round to close the match.

In the Tigers' final match of the week they overcame Kingsburg for a close 5-4 victory to close the week.

In the JV matches, Woodlake took six wins to topple Fowler's single victory. Against Strathmore, Laura Sanchez and Christina Cendejas took a 5-4 victory over the Spartans in a doubles match.
