In a grueling five-game match, the Exeter Monarchs clenched the league title over Immanuel last Friday with a 17-15 victory at the end of a two and a half hour battle.

Exeter went into the match undefeated against the Eagles whose only loss this season came by way of the Monarchs in the first round of play. An Eagles' win would have put the two at a co championship standing.

&#8220The Immanuel match was everything a championship game should be,” Exeter coach Alana Montgomery said. &#8220Both team's battled for two and a half hours, giving their fans a night of exciting and intense volleyball.”

Exeter had an outstanding night of serving making 90 of 90 serves with six aces against the Eagles. Amanda Morgan led with three aces while Tiffany Marinos, Callie Souza and Renee Barnett had one a piece.

Barnett was the top hitter for the night with 20 kills and Marinos had 19.

Top diggers were Marinos with 15 and Amber Capello with 10.

&#8220Although most of the night the teams were within two points of each other, when our girls did fall behind they always fought their way back,” Montgomery said. &#8220It was a total team effort. I couldn't be more proud of these athletes.”

The win upped the Monarchs to a 10-0 league record and dropped Immanuel to 8-2.

Earlier in the week, the Monarchs also earned a win over Dinuba. Exeter won the match in three games, 25-3, 25-9, 25-11.

Barnett dominated the court with 10 kills, three aces and nine digs. Marinos had another big night with eight kills, four aces and nine digs.

Setter Laura Brinkman made 35 assists, three aces and two kills for Exeter.

Meanwhile, on the other side of Highway 198, Woodlake's volleyball squad went 1-1 for the week starting of with a loss to Immanuel in three games and followed it up with an exciting five game victory over Coalinga, 25-22, 21-25, 25-15, 25-27 and 17-15.

Kaitlin Beck led the Tigers with 12 kills, and one ace against the Horned Toads. Heather Rivas added to the Tigers win with three kills and four aces to be the top server for the night. Janee Plunkett made four kills and three aces to down the Toads and Sonni Fultz earned nine kills and three aces to add to the punch.
