What a way to go.

The Monarchs held the lead over Yosemite in the second round, Division III, Central Section playoff game through the third quarter.

It looked like the Monarchs, led by quarterback Chris Mayabb, running back Denno Daly and wide receiver Eric Capello, would advance to a third round of playoff contest and inch closer to a Valley Title.

But the heartbreaking battle in Oakhurst turned into Exeter's last dance as the Monarchs began to crumble as they headed into the final quarter.

Despite a 10-19 Exeter lead at the half, the Monarchs offense was stumped in the second. Holding Exeter to a field goal in the fourth quarter, the Badgers leaped ahead with three touchdowns for a 30-22 Yosemite victory.

Unable to move the ball consistently in the second half, Exeter fell behind as Yosemite's Josh Nunez made a four yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Aaron Wilkins and made a 24-yard and a 1-yard touchdown runs in the fourth.

Exeter started the scoring though with a Daly 53-yard touchdown run that looked like the perfect start to the perfect game.

But within a minute the Badgers came knocking with a 23-yard touchdown pass into the hands of Drew Mar. But Exeter stayed ahead with an Eric Capello 61-yard touchdown run with four minutes left in the first quarter.

Yosemite kept the game close with a second quarter field goal at the opening of the quarter. Daly made his second and final touchdown of the night on a 7-yard rushing play after an interception by Mayabb returned the ball in Exeter's possession.

Exeter failed to add points to the board until Derec McClellan made a 35-yard field goal in the fourth.

Exeter fell short and finished the season with an impressive 9-3 record.
