Lady Card‘s struggle in opening tournament

Lindsay traveled to Porterville all last week for their first tournament play of the season. Hosted by Porterville and Monache, the Tiny Hill Classic featured teams from Visalia, Lindsay, Strathmore and Porterville.

The Lady Cardinals played well in their opening round game of the Porterville Tournament but suffered a 43-37 loss at the hands of the Wasco Tigers.

Captain Russie Sanders led the way with 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Junior forward Jessica Padilla added 12 points, four rebounds and two steals. The loss put the Cardinals into the consolation bracket where they were pitted against Tulare Union.

In round two of the tournament Lindsay put out its strongest effort of the season to earn a 41-38 win over the Redskins.

The Lady Cardinals were led by Sanders' 24 point scoring effort. Sanders also worked for seven rebounds and five steals. Freshman Cassie Manning came off the bench to spark the Lady Cardinals with 6 points and junior Stephanie Hernandez grabbed 12 rebounds while playing her usual tough defense. The win marks Lindsay's first victory of the season and adjusts their record to 1-4.

In their third contest of the tournament, the Cardinals returned for another loss. This time, they suffered a tough 49-47 overtime loss to Strathmore. Sanders led in points again with 16 and tacked on 12 big rebounds. Sophomore Jordan Morillo scored a career high 13 points to go with her four rebounds while freshman Stevi Ibarra added 6 points, three rebounds and three assists. Senior Valerie Chairez chipped in with 10 points.

It was Lindsay's second loss to Strathmore this season. In their last battle, the Cardinals dropped a 55-34 decision to their rivals less than one week earlier.

In their final battle at the Tiny Hill Classic, Lindsay faced stiff competition from Visalia's Mt. Whitney High School. The Cardinals fell 56-39 to drop their record to 1-6 at the close of the tournament.

The Lady Cardinals played well in the third quarter and early in the fourth after trailing 27-14 at halftime in a 56-39 loss. Senior captain Russie Sanders again led the way for Lindsay with 12 points and three steals. Freshman Stevi Ibarra, up from the junior varsity squad for the week, hit a pair of three pointers and finished with 8 points. Another freshman, Cassie Manning also hit a three-pointer and ended with five points.

Lindsay begins play in the Central Valley Christian tournament today as they face Garces at 3:30 p.m.
