Monarchs take 2nd in Valley

Exeter won't quit. At the Division II championship meet in Kingsburg on Saturday, May 13, the Lady Monarchs battled their way into second place earning 265 points to take second behind El Diamante High.

The Woodlake Tigers took 11th place with a score of 73 while Lindsay took 14th place with a 43. Only two Lindsay swimmers competed at the meet accounting for the low team score.

It was another first place day for Exeter team leaders Megan Eppler and Sam Goates. The two sophomore speedsters won four events each. The two teamed up with Sharna Yee and Makenda Hill to finish the girls 200-yard medley relay in 1:57.60 to knock out Kingsburg's team with a time of 1:58.41.

Eppler, Goates, Yee and Kellie Goodwin earned another relay win in the 400 freestyle. The team finished in 3:54.20 to defeat El Diamante by more than five seconds.

Individually, Eppler won the 200-yard individual medley (IM) with a time of 2:11.68 to beat Lindsay standout Jordan Morillo. Morillo took second with a time of 2:18.88. Eppler, a quality distance swimmer also won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:15.76 blowing the competition out of the water. Second place went to Tehachapi's Chelsea Dominguez who trailed with a time of 5:46.69.

In the individual events, Goates placed first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.95. In the 100-yard backstroke, Goates broke one minute to take first place with a time of 59.84. The next closest swimmer was Cheyenny Coffman of Sierra who scored a time of 1:04.12.

Exeter scored points all over the meet with contributions coming from Goodwin in the 200 IM, Makenda Hill in the 50 free, McKenzie Hurrick and Abbie Kaage in the 500 freestyle, Sarah Nail in the 100-yard breast stroke and Sierra Edwards and Hanna LaFleur in the diving event.

On the boy's side of the meet, Exeter took fifth place with 166 points behind El Diamante, Taft, Kingsburg and Shafter.

The Monarchs only win for the meet came from Matt Carey in the one-meter dive competition. He took first place earning a score of 334.96.

Exeter was able to earn several top 10 finishes across the board.

Dan Munsch took fourth place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:12.23.He also took third place in the 100 free with a time of 50.84. Along with Andrew Jones, Nick Jones and Blake Kleinhans, Munsch led the 200-yard free relay team to fourth place in 1:36.44. The same team placed seventh in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:41.63.

Another local swimmer, Ryan Baker out of Woodlake swam the 200 IM in 2:10.97 to take third place ahead of Munsch.
