The Exeter Monarchs successfully defended the Valencia Cup with an impressive 47-0 victory over the Woodlake Tigers Friday night in Exeter.

The Monarchs opened the scoring on their second possession of the game and never looked back.

Cameron Loeffler's two-yard touchdown run capped off a 66-yard drive.

The Tigers threatened to get on the board when Blake Mitchell recovered a fumble early in the second quarter.

But Woodlake's offense was denied by a big interception in the end zone by Pedro Saldana.

The Monarchs took a 14-0 lead when Loeffler followed up a 34-yard run with a one-yard plunge into the end zone for his second score of the night.

Exeter senior quarterback Deric McClellan then found Chris Parker for a 39-yard touch down pass for a three-touch down lead to complete first half scoring.

In the third quarter, a rock-solid Exeter defense did a little scoring of their own when Kyle Schmidt's big hit in the backfield produced a fumble that was scooped up by Brandon Guglielmoni and returned 40 yards for the touchdown.

The rest of the quarter brought rushing touchdowns from Vince Pascoe and Sergio Ortiz, both from seven yards out. Ortiz would finish the night with 114-yards on 14 carries.

A fourth quarter interception by Patrick Hutcheson helped preserve the shutout and setup Loeffler for a 29-yard touchdown run, his third score of the night.

Loeffler would finish the game with 162 rushing yards on 24 carries.

The Wodlake offense was held to only 47 rushing yards and 82 total yards by a Monarch defense led by middle linebacker Josh Wilson with 10 tackles, and Cris Lemus with three and a half. Schmidt would add three and a half tackles of his own.

Exeter coach Ben white said he was &#8220pleasantly surprised.”

&#8220I didn't know what to expect but I knew we were a good team,” he said.

Coach White said his team needs to cut down on penalties and turnovers but wants them to &#8220keep playing the way we play.”

The Monarchs will try to do that at home against the Lindsay Cardinals on Friday night.
