Woodlake sends four athletes to Valley

It was a Woodlake showdown over the weekend as Priscilla Ruiz and Heather Wood battled for first place in the East Sequoia League Singles tournament on Saturday, Oct. 21 in Orosi.

They each won three straight matches to make it to the final round and the No. 2 seeded Ruiz captured first place winning two of three matches 7-5 and 6-1 over her No. 4 seeded teammate.

Ruiz paved her way to the championship by defeating Orosi's own Berenice Mata 8-1 in the first round of play. She went on to down Amy Phillips of Corcoran 8-1 and brought down Corcoran's Karina Rosas in the semi final. The semi final match up was a hard fought battle and Ruiz won the first set 6-4, lost the second set 2-6 and went on to win the tiebreaker 7-2.

Wood played her way to the top by defeating first round opponent Danielle Gonzalez of Orosi in an 8-0 shutout. She dominated again against Strathmore's Emily Clifton winning 8-2. Wood faced the No. 1 seeded Heather Cabatuton out of Orosi in a grueling three sets. Wood won the first 6-3 but Cabatuton came back to take the second victory 4-6. In the tiebreaker, Wood managed to pull out a big 7-3 win to move on to the Championship round.

Woodlake's third player in the singles tournament, Karla Thompson won in her first round match by way of a 8-7, 7-2 tiebreaker against Corcoran's Candice Powell. Thompson went on to fall to No. 1 Cabututan 8-6.

Lindsay's Brenda Martinez fell in the first round to No. 5 Clifton 8-2. Teammate Priscilla Ortiz lost her first round match to No. 3 Rosas 8-1. The Cardinals Alejandra Preciado, seeded No. 7 lost in the first round to Amy Phillips of Corcoran 8-0.

Ruiz, Wood, Cabututan and Rosas will all continue into the post season in singles play at the Valley Individual Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 28 in Porterville.

In the doubles tournament, there was another local showdown in the consolation match between Lindsay's Laura Rivas and Sara Cadena and Woodlake's Amanda Garcia and Sandra Zequeida. Garcia and Zequeida won the match in two sets 6-0 and 6-3 to take third place. Both pairs will now go on to compete in the Valley Tournament in Porterville on Oct. 28.

Zequeida and Garcia, seeded No. 4 received a bye in the first round and defeated Woodlake's Karah Letson and Chelsea Sweeney 8-3 in the quarterfinals. The pair went on to fall to Corcoran's No. 1 seeded Aly Samareta and Alyssa Tapia in the best of three semifinal match 6-2 and 6-4. No. 3 seeded Garcia and Zequeida also received a bye in the first round and won in the quarterfinals over Corcoran's Emily Cribbs and Michelle Bortz 8-3. The pair lost in the Semifinals to Orosi's No. 1 seeded Cendy Garcia and Susie Arellano 7-5 and 6-3. The Orosi pair went on to win the tournament.

Central Sequoia League Tournament

The Exeter Monarchs took a big win at the Central Sequoia League Tournament on Saturday. The Monarchs top doubles team of Eva Rodriguez and Danni Berlin won the doubles tournament to take Exeter's first gold in the tournament. The pair won three straight matches to take first and will compete at the individual Valley Tournament in Porterville on Saturday, Oct. 28.
