GIRLS SOCCER: Spartans take first Title

By Andrea Camarena

The Strathmore girls soccer team sped down the road of perfection this season. The Spartans traveled to Farmersville to finish up their East Sierra League schedule with a 10-0 record, taking down the Aztecs 4-1 in regulation.

In his fourth year of coaching, Strathmore's Hector Gonzalez will earn the school's first undefeated league season for girls soccer in the high school's history as well as their first league title.

And the best part for Gonzalez, he has virtually the same team returning next season.

&#8220We have a fairly young team,” Gonzalez said. &#8220I have two starting seniors and the rest are all underclassmen. So, we're hoping to have a good season next year.”

The Strathmore program has flourished since Gonzalez' arrival and now 40 girls are playing for the Spartans and their success is turning heads in the valley.

&#8220Other schools have been very supportive when we go to play big schools,” Gonzalez said. &#8220They're impressed with the poise of the girls.”

The Spartans earned the No. 7 seed in Valley playoffs and in the first round hosted none other than No. 10 Farmersville for a perfectly timed rematch on Tuesday, Feb. 13. The game occurred after press time and will be covered in the Feb. 21 issue of the Sun-Gazette.

The rivalry was strong in Friday's game between the Aztecs and Spartans.

&#8220This game is very important, it will signify our undefeated season,” Strathmore senior forward and goalie Rosemary Medina said before the game. &#8220It shows how much we've grown up. Since the beginning, we knew we were a good team and winning tonight will prove how hard we've worked.”

The game in Farmersville ended with yellow cards and volatile fans and the teams were closely matched throughout the season.

&#8220Our biggest challenge is their fastest player, Dulce Escamilla,” Strathmore senior forward Ana Bravo said. &#8220She's got their speed.”

The winner of Tuesday's game will go on to face No. 2 Liberty Memorial on Thursday, Feb. 15.
