WRESTLING: Monarchs place second at CSL tourney

In their first season in the Central Sequoia League, the Monarchs wrestling team stood out at the league tournament on Saturday, Feb. 10, taking first place in five weight classes and second place as a team.

The Monarchs fell short of a Co-Championship with Selma by 3 points. Selma took first place at the tournament to seal the league title with a team score of 216 while Exeter came in second with a score of 213.

Kingsburg finished in third place with 175 points, Dinuba took fourth with 84 and Coalinga took fifth place with 81 points.

Twelve Exeter wrestlers placed in the top three in their weight class to qualify for the Valley Tournament on Friday, Feb. 16 in Tehachapi.

Exeter's Robert Patino won the 125-pound weight class at Saturday's tournament going 2-0 pinning Dinuba's Juan Gomez 3:30 and defeating Coalinga's Joseph Filipe who forfeited due to injury.

In the 135-pound weight class, Exeter's Will Hammerslagh went 2-0 to take first place. He pinned Coalinga's Cody Wells in 2:55 then defeated Selma's Julian Tovar in a 9-2 decision in the finals.

Exeter's Josh Wilson went 2-0 to win the 160-pound weight class defeating Kingsburg's Tyler Grandal 18-4 and pinning Coalinga's Trevor Brazelton in 2:43 in the finals.

A.J. Almanza won the 171-pound weight class for Exeter going 2-0. He pinned Dinuba's Robert Hernandez in 1:13 in the preliminaries then defeated Selma's Ricky Ruiz by a 19-7 decision in the finals.

Exeter took first in the 189-pound weight class with Joey Avila going 2-0. Avila started out with a victory over Kingsburg's Wade Jackson. Avila pinned Jackson in 3:42 then took a 10-8 decision over Selma's Able Ruiz to win the final.

Other Exeter wrestlers placed in the top three to qualify for valley. Jason Gagnon took second in the 103-pound weight class. Eric Cervantes took third place in the 112-pound weight class. Nathaniel Cruz took second place in the 119-pound class.

Anthony Gomez took third in the 130-pound weight class.

Cody Stewart placed second in the 145-pound weight class while Kory Costa took second in the 152-pound weight class.

John Parker placed third in the 215-pound class to qualify.

The top four placers at the Valley Tournament will qualify for the Grand Masters Tournament. The top four placers at Grand Masters go on to State.

The Valley Tournament will begin at noon on Friday, Feb. 16 and continue through Saturday, Feb. 17 at Tehachapi.
