Lady Monarchs swim into second

The Exeter girls swim team missed first place by 2 points at the fifth annual Tulare Union Pentathlon on Saturday, March 10.

With 576 team points, the Lady Monarchs took second place behind Monache with 578 points.

Exeter junior Sam Goates won all five girls races at the Pentathlon to take first place in the individual scoring.

Goates sped through the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.50.

Exeter freshman Tiffany Brummet also placed in the individual top 10 and took fourth place in the opening butterfly event, recording a time of 1:12.72.

Junior Teammate Kellie Goodwin took 13th place in the butterfly, finishing in 1:19.83. Goodwin also swam her way into the top 10 overall performances at the Pentathlon out of more than 40 competitors.

Goates went on to take the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.31, out swimming the closest competitor by more than 9 seconds.

Brummet finished in 1:14.43 for ninth place. Goodwin took 11th place in 1:14.64.

Goates led the pack in the 100-yard breaststroke finishing in 1:15.94 for first place.

Exeter's Sarah Nail took fifth place in 1:20.23 while Brummet took 10th place in 1:23.46 and teammate Zandra Mitchell placed 15th in 1:26.98.

Goates went on to win the 100-yard freestyle in 56.34 edging out Porterville's Kimber Methvin by just over one second. Brummet finished in 1:02.57 for fifth place. Goodwin took 11th place in 1:05.67 narrowly beating teammate Mitchell who finished in 1:05.68.

In the fifth and final event, Goates won the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:20.64. She out swam second place Methvin by 8 seconds.

Brummet displayed her strength by finishing the medley in 2:34.41 for third place.

Goodwin took seventh place in 2:42.41 for third place. The Monarchs will face former league rivals Woodlake in their next home meet on Tuesday, March 20 at the Exeter pool.
