Exeter softball gets late jump on season

By Andrea Camarena

The Monarchs are off to a late start this softball season.

With an extended basketball season, half of the starting lineup joined the softball squad on Monday and the team began league play on Friday, March 16.

With little prep time, the Monarchs fell 4-0 to the defending Valley Champions, Dinuba in Exeter.

The game was the first of three versus the Emperors as this year's six-team league will go through three-rounds of play instead of two.

The Monarchs are returning from a 15-13, 10-4 league performance in 2006 with seven returning players.

Starting pitcher, Caitlin Carter took the loss and in 6.1 innings gave up no earned runs, struck out three batters and gave up four hits.

At the plate, Carter was unstoppable, going three for three, but was never batted in.

Marlene Gonzalez, Callie Souza, Ashley Wilson and Niki Zeibak each picked up one hit.

On the field, Exeter totaled five costly errors.

The 2-4 Monarchs will swing back into action with another home game at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 23 when Exeter hosts 1-2 Immanuel.
