Tigers tennis finds its swing

By Andrea Camarena

Woodlake tennis finally reaped the rewards of an experienced squad on Thursday, Feb. 15 as the Tigers took an 8-1 win over 0-4 Riverdale in a non-league contest. Woodlake will now enter East Sequoia League play 1-4.

The Tigers won all but one doubles match against Riverdale with Carlos DeLeon and Cesar Navarrete each earning a shutout win in singles play.

The Tigers were a little slow coming out of the gate in non-league boys tennis meets, going 0-3 against Strathmore, Kingsburg and Fowler.

Despite the early losses, the Tigers have a promising roster with 20 players and seven returning varsity athletes. Since the school restarted the program in 2004, this is the first season that the team will have four-year varsity players.

Ulmaro Cuevas and Walter Marroquin will be strong team leaders in their fourth season as varsity players.

&#8220The experience and competitiveness helps the rest of the team raise their level o performance,” Woodlake coach Mike Judson said.
