STRATHMORE – The Spartans got the first win of the Division IV playoffs last Thursday when they moved up their opening round game against the Taft Wildcats an hour to 6 p.m. Strathmore swept Taft 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-19).

Strathmore got off to a great start in the first two sets. They did have to deal with a rotation change the Wildcats made in the second set which made things closer, but the Spartans still won.

While, the rotation change was a minor bump in the second set it began to give Strathmore problems in the third as Taft led for most of the set. Strathmore’s head coach Sonny Perez called a time out and took the chance to refocus his team to their purpose, “to play as a team.”

“I was teaching them life lessons during the volleyball game, to try to get their head outside of the game, and have them view it from a different perspective,” Perez said.

Those pieces of advice must have worked as Strathmore settled down and played their game and quickly won their final set.

Strathmore traveled to face the No. 3-seeded Chowchilla Tribe last night. Final happened after press time.
