Lindsay sports and rec center to host Cartwheel-A-Thon on Jan. 19 to raise money for gymnastics equipment
LINDSAY – Local athletes are doing cartwheels for McDermont X.
The sports and recreation center in Lindsay is hosting a Cartwheel-A-Thon fundraiser event on Saturday, Jan. 19 to raise funds for the purchase of gymnastics equipment to support their continued development and the program.
Beginning at 2 p.m., 25 gymnasts will each select a tumbling skill of their choice and perform it as many times as possible in one minute. Parent volunteers will time the gymnasts and tally the total amount. Suzanne Terrill, McDermont Gymnastics Program instructor, said she is seeking sponsors to pledge a self-selected amount per tumbling skill or to make a monetary donation of their choice.
In addition, a 50/50 drawing will be held and tickets may be purchased for $1 each from parents. The McDermont X Cartwheel-A-Thon is open to the public for an admission fee of $5.00 which can be purchased from a gymnast or at the door. Everyone is invited to come and join the fun by supporting their local gymnasts.
Terrill said the grass-roots gymnastics program does not have any equipment due to the high cost of equipment. The fundraiser will all Terrill to buy a pommel horse and a rezi pit which cost $1,100 and $1,500 respectively. With equipment, Terrill said her athletes will have the opportunity to register for competitions.
McDermont Gymnastics Program is a fast growing recreational gymnastics program located in Lindsay. Now in its third year of operation, 25 boys and girls, ages 3-13, are having fun learning level up to four gymnastics skills. Introductory and beginner classes for all ages are held on Thursdays afterschool and into the evening. Parents have been instrumental in promoting the expansion of this program by participating in the Boosters Club.
