Each week, Exeter Union High School coaches will nominate outstanding players in each sport. These players will be featured here in the newspaper as well as at Kirkman’s VIP Pizza. This week’s players are listed below.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
COS falls to Fresno City
State No. 8-ranked COS fell into a double-digit deficit late in the first half and never recovered as No. 10 Fresno City rolled to a 72-53 victory on Jan. 11 at Porter Field House.

The Giants (12-4 overall) fall into a tie for second place with Columbia, Merced and Porterville at 1-1.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Fresno City beats COS
College of the Sequoias lost control of the game midway through the second quarter and never recovered en route to a 76-59 Central Valley Conference loss to Fresno City on Jan. 11 at Porter Field House.

The state No. 17-ranked Giants led by eight points (23-15) on a layup by Alaysia Reed (Las Vegas) with 7:58 remaining in the second quarter. But COS made only 2 of 15 shots the rest of the quarter as the Rams closed on an 18-4 run to build a 33-27 lead at halftime.

After Fresno City (9-7, 1-0) opened the second half on a 7-0 run, the Giants (12-6, 1-1) never got closer than an eight-point deficit.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Strathmore senior goes over 2,000 career points
Jazmine Soto continued her superb high school career by adding a major accolade to her resume. In their game against Farmersville last Friday where she scored 39 points, she eclipsed the 2000 career points mark. The team is 17-2 and is 3-0 in league. 

BOYS BASKETBALL
Exeter continues losing streak
The Monarchs are still searching for their first league win. Last week they fell to Selma 66-51 and then to Hanford West 63-41. They travel to Kingsburg on Wednesday Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. they’ll play Kingsburg and then Friday Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. they’ll host Dinuba.
