Ranger football mauls Miners; wins 4 of their last 5

Redwood controls offense, defense and special teams in 42-14 win against El Diamante

VISALIA – After an 0-3 start to the season, the Redwood Rangers look like an entirely new team. Since then, they’ve won four of the last five games, including a massive victory last Friday night against the El Diamante Miners.

The Rangers ran right over the Miners, en route to nearly 250 yards on the ground. The strong running game was coupled with a strong passing game, making the Redwood offense nearly impossible to stop. “Early in the game we threw the ball combined with the run. Once we settled in, we established a running game which opened up the play-action passing game,” Redwood head coach Kevin Scharton said.

Scharton’s desire for his team moving forward is simple: keep playing hard. In past games, the Rangers’ path to victory has been having breakout games from one of their key players. However, senior receiver Ashton Ibarra feels that the key to beating El Diamante was getting everyone involved.

“It was great that all the receivers were catching passes, and being able to get the ball into Karson Everett’s hands, and him running the ball very well,” Ibarra said.

Everyone was playing lights out for the Rangers. This was as close to a perfect game as you see in football. Being that El Diamante is an inner-city rival for the Rangers, this game held great importance. Senior Ty Potts believes that it felt great to show the differences in the skill of the two teams.

“It felt great to show them who the better school really is,” he said.

There was a lot of animosity between the two teams last week. It was very clear that this motivated the Rangers and gave them a lot of energy which they played with all night.

Next week the Rangers will take on another cross-town rival, Mt. Whitney, in the annual Cowhide game. The Miners will take on their other cross-town rival Golden West in the annual Battle for the Saddle.

At press time, El Diamante did not respond to an interview request.
