Granite Hills Grizzlies boys basketball mount 20-point win against McFarland

Granite Hills boys basketball beats McFarland 62-42 after getting their offense rolling in the second half

PORTERVILLE – The Granite Hills Grizzlies boys basketball team beat the McFarland Cougars, 62-42 at home last Tuesday evening. This win places the Grizzlies on a three-game win streak outscoring opponents 151-100 in that span.

The Dec. 14 game started off slow with the score only being 13-11 after the first quarter and at 26-22 with the Grizzlies up at half. The Grizzlies offense really pumped up the scoring in the 4th quarter dropping 24 points on the period. Blas Diaz was responsible for 11 points in the fourth quarter but scored 20 on the night. Senior Dario Alcantar also had 15 and led the team in rebounds, also holding McFarland star player Devon McCullough to 11 points on the evening.

When asked what it felt like to beat a worthy opponent Grizzlies head coach Bud Luther said, “We just take these games one at a time, We knew they were tough and we did what we had to in order to take care of business.”

Luther also expressed his emotions about having junior point guard Angel Perez back after missing three games due to a groin injury. He mentioned that with Perez back, “It is nice to have some stability; It’s great to have someone who can calm the team down and run the offense which puts the team in a great position to come out with a win.”

The Grizzlies had their work cut out for them heading into last weekend. Luther could only hope that his team could stay healthy throughout. “I hope the team stays healthy over this tough stretch of games and gets ready for League.”

They must have been at least healthy enough collecting wins against Summit Charter, Orosi, Woodlake and Mendota all in the span of 4 days. League play is right around the corner as the Grizzlies face off against the Strathmore Spartans at home on Jan. 5.

As for the Cougars now (4-3), they head home in hopes of preparing for the Wasco tournament Thursday afternoon with their first two opponents being Ceasar Chavez high (4-5), Wonderful Collegiate prep (2-7).
