Exeter boys soccer proves victorious against Mt. Whitney in 2-1 win during non-conference game
EXETER – The Monarchs’ boys soccer squad found their way to the winning path after defeating the Mt. Whitney Pioneers 2-1. It’s Exeter’s second win on the season after losing their first five games to begin the 2021-2022 year.
Exeter’s head coach, Pete Renteria said that the team’s effort throughout the game was good.
Of course no coach is going to say his team was perfect. Renteria said his team needed some additional pointers in shot selection and explained that his squad could have been better in that area.
The first half of the game was a battle for the ball between the two teams resulting in a clean sheet. The second half is where all points were made. The Monarchs scored their first goal early in the half, and it was followed by Miguelito Lara immediately after.
The Pioneers attempted to catch up when Diego Vijil Falla, scored after teammate Nolan Williams’ shot hit the woodwork.
As for the Mt. Whitney Pioneers, breaking their winning streak will not stop them. Pioneer coach Julio Gutierrez explained that, “We did everything that we have been practicing…[being] short on players handicapped us a little bit.” He added that the team gave good effort and everything they got into this game.
Mario Romero, team captain, added that the effort the players showed was good and that if there was something to work on it would be the team’s communication. This game brought the Pioneers record to 3-8-1.
Exeter Monarch’s upcoming game is Jan.4, at home against the Central Valley Christian, Cavaliers.
