Miners dig out first home win in ’21 season

The El Diamante Miners defeat the Roosevelt Rough Riders 4-0 to earn their first home victory

VISALIA – The Miners dug out their first home victory last Wednesday night. They earned it in a 4-0 shutout over the Roosevelt Rough Riders to go 5-4-4 on the season so far.

Head coach Austin Gonzalez III said the game was a good team effort as the team worked alongside one another in assistance. El Diamante’s leading scorer on the night, Joshua Urista echoed Gonzalez III’s comments and added that he felt good about the game and was proud of the win they had earned.

During the first half there was a penalty kick score by the Miner’s Roberto Marquez as well as two goals made. One of them was made by Oscar Reyna and the other one by Urista. The Miners were very aggressive with the ball, constantly stealing from Roosevelt players and making sure to keep the ball between a shield of their own players’ feet.

During the second half Urista scored again, but this time with the assistance of Conner Caviglia and Beckham Ybarra. At first Caviglia had the ball then passed to Ybarra who attempted to shoot into the goal hitting just the outside of the post. Urista came into do some cleanup work and kicked the ball through the net to go up 4-0.

The win marked their first at home all season and could prove to be a turning point for the Miners. El Diamante squared off against the Hanford Bullpups on Tuesday, Jan. 11 after press time. Gonzalez III expressed his admiration for the team after his team won last Wednesday having said that he expects it will be a tough game. He added that Hanford is well coached, but maintains that he had faith that his team could pull out the win.
