Inaugural 5-K run draws 345 participants from five school districts as a way to build confidence and positive relationship among young girls

OROSI — An empowerment program for young girls, taking place through running, attracted nearly 350 participants from five school districts to Orosi High School over the weekend.

Girls on the Run Tulare & Fresno Counties chapter hosted an inaugural 5-kilometer run on April 20. Girls in grades 3 through 8 participate in a 10 week series of lessons and physical activity. According to Tonya Goosev, council director for the area chapter, the program is designed to build confidence and positive relationships, learn strategies to manage stress and other situations while preparing for a 5K.

Goosev called Saturday’s turnout a “great success” with 345 girls, coaches and running buddies crossing the finish line at the OHS football stadium. Runners and supporters came from five different school districts: Cutler-Orosi, Monson-Sultana, Dinuba Unified, Kingsburg Unified and Parlier Unified. Many of the participating schools had tents set up on the site for runners.

Goosev said the goal of the Girls on the Run (GOTR) program is to spread joy throughout Tulare and Fresno counties and create a family celebration of wellness, fitness and empowerment. The organization’s motto on one of the displayed signs is: “The finish line is just the beginning,” with key words of “learn,” “dream,” “live” and “run.”

The organization also received a large financial grant from Rite Aid Healthy Futures to launch GOTR in the Central Valley.
