El Diamante baseball rolls to a 13-4 victory over Porterville; Miners improve to 4-9 in league, 11-16 overall with the postseason fast approaching

PORTERVILLE – El Diamante baseball has not had the best season in the East Yosemite League, but you would not have been able to tell this past Wednesday night. On the road against the Porterville Panthers, the Miners struck gold against their league rival.

In the opening inning, the Miners got off to a 5-0 lead to take control of the game. The Panthers tried to play catchup, but the Miners maintained control throughout the night to walk away with the 13-4 win. While the Miners have had their struggles in the EYL this spring, El Diamante coach Andrew Riddle thought they put together a complete performance on May 8.

“We finally put it all together and hopefully we’re going to continue that going into playoffs. We carried a lot of confidence to the plate today and we competed on the mound. I’m really happy with our performance,” Riddle said.

He continued, “Pitcher Jordan Rhyner really composed himself after the first inning and got ahead early in counts. Multiple hitters had multi-hit games and our hard work at practice really translated today.”

The Miners climbed to 5-9 in league play and 11-16 overall. With their win, they also avoided a season sweep after losing their previous two meetings with the Panthers this season. Meanwhile, the Panthers fell to 9-5 in league and 15-8 overall.

In the top of the first inning, the Miners lit it up like dynamite at the plate. After getting two runners on base, Elijah Contreras drove in a run with a bunt. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, back-to-back walks drove in Matthew Dykstra and Contreras for a pair of runs.

Cole Martinez kept it rolling for the Miners when he scored on a groundout. Nick Reynoso then made it a 5-0 lead when he scored thanks to a sacrifice fly from his teammate D’Angelo Dalle Mese. The Panthers responded in the bottom of the first with a couple runs to cut the deficit to 5-2, but the Miners remained hot at the plate.

In the second, Reynoso singled to center field to drive in a run. He then scored on a passed ball to stretch the lead to 7-2. Back-to-back hits from Mese and Aden Robles drove in another pair of runs to push El Diamante’s lead to 9-2.

Later in the third, the Miners continued to bury the Panthers. Martinez came through with an RBI single for the Miners and Sebastian Aiello drove in another run to push the lead to 11-2. In the fourth, the Panthers did their best with a couple runs to make it an 11-4 game. But the Miners could not be stopped.

In the fifth with two runners on base, Robles doubled to center to clear the bases and make it a 13-4 lead for El Diamante. The Miners then held Porterville scoreless the rest of the way to wrap up the big victory that they hope will give them momentum heading into the postseason.
