Three arrested in brief pursuits

The Visalia Police Department arrested three suspects after two brief pursuits last week.

The first happened on Jan. 29 when officers with the Special Enforcement Unit (SEU) attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of Robin and Conyer. At about 11:11 p.m., the vehicle failed to yield and a pursuit was initiated. During the brief one-minute chase, the vehicle ran through two stop signs heading eastbound on Robin. The suspect later pulled into a driveway on north Bridge Street and surrendered. The driver, 30-year-old Ben Miles, was booked for failure to yield as well as three outstanding arrest warrants.

The second chase happened on foot on Jan. 30. Just before 5 p.m., SEU officers attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of Giddings and Vine. Upon stopping, Richard Castaneda, a known Norteno gang member, ran from the vehicle. He was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.

Officers discovered the 43-year-old Castaneda was carrying a loaded firearm, which made this his second arrest by the SEU this month for carrying a loaded firearm. The driver, 34-year-old Jason Perez, was detained at the vehicle. During a follow up probation search of Perez’s residence officers located an amount of narcotics and a high capacity weapon magazine. An unrelated female was cited for an outstanding warrant at the residence. The two suspects were booked for numerous charges as well as a gang enhancement.
