City of Visalia to seal cracks in residential roads

Measure N-funded street maintenance will smooth out roads in southwestern part of Visalia in the next few weeks

VISALIA – One of the tenets of Measure N was to catch up on road maintenance throughout the city of Visalia’s nearly 500 miles of roadway. There’s nothing new and exciting about roadway maintenance, unless you’re a mechanic getting paid hundreds of dollars to replace and repair shocks, struts and alignments from cars getting beat up by bumps in the road.

As part of the City’s annual Street Maintenance Program paid for by the half-cent sales tax approved by voters in 2016, various residential streets in the southwestern quadrant of the City have been scheduled to receive crack sealing in the coming weeks.

“This road improvement work is made possible by Visalians through Measure N,” shared Norm Goldstrom, City of Visalia Public Works Manager. “Thanks to residents, we’re able to perform this street maintenance work over the next month, during the week days from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. No weekend work is anticipated.”

No streets will be closed due to the work, but crews will flag residential traffic around the moving work zones.

“There will be three crews working, a traffic control/notification crew, a crack preparation crew and a crack sealing crew,” added Goldstrom. “Cracks in the road will be blown out with an air compressor and lance, then sealed with a hot asphalt pot and wand. The hot sealant dries within minutes and can then be driven over without issue.”

“No Parking” signs will be placed along the street approximately 72 hours prior to the start of work and will include the specific dates and times that parking will be restricted. Refuse, recycling and green waste collection will not be impacted, residents are asked to roll out their bins as usual.

The road maintenance project schedule is:

Week 1: Work began on Jan. 28 and includes residential streets between Mooney Boulevard on the east and Akers Road on the west, and between Caldwell Avenue on the south and Noble Avenue on the north.

Week 2: Work will begin on Feb. 4 and includes residential streets between Demaree Street to the east and Shirk Road to the west, and between Caldwell Avenue on the south and Noble Avenue on the north.

Week 3: Work will begin on Feb. 11 and includes residential streets between Mooney Boulevard to the east and Demaree Street to the west, Akers Road to Shirk Road, and between Caldwell Avenue on the south and Noble Avenue on the north.

Public Safety will have emergency access to the roadway and nearby residents and businesses will have local access to their properties while the work is in progress. Weekly street lists and corresponding maps are available online at www.visalia.city/streets.
